Quality Road Scratched From $5M Classic
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) ―
Quality Road was scratched from the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic after he bucked violently in the starting gate.
The 3-year-old refused to enter Saturday before the signature race at Santa Anita. Handlers tried everything to get him into the gate, including placing a hood over his head.
After he was finally put into the gate, Quality Road bucked numerous times and was backed out.
The rest of the field also was backed out of the starting gate. They were led back in moments later, and unbeaten mare Zenyatta ended up coming from behind to win.
Quality Road won the Florida Derby and was injured before the Kentucky Derby. He's run three times and was second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in his last race.
