Thousands Flock To 'Weeping' Mary Statue In Mexico

PEDRO ESCOBEDO, Mexico (CBS) ― Thousands of Mexican Catholics have flocked to the village of Pedro Escobedo in the state of Queretaro since Sunday to see a figure of the Virgin Mary that was allegedly shedding tears.

The statue, slightly more than 20 inches tall, has been in the chapel of the Mexican municipality for two years.

Worshippers have been gathering to look at the statue, which is housed in a glass case, taking photos and making their own blessings.

People in the village said that on Sunday they had taken the statue on a bicycle pilgrimage to the nearby town of Soriano.

The tears were detected upon its return.

According to residents, an eight-year-old boy came and knocked on their doors to inform them after they had returned home.

No one seemed to know the identity of the boy.

The Diocese of Queretaro said through spokesman Jose Morales Flores that it would study the case, but that it was not yet able to categorize the event as a miracle.

Morales said a special commission would be created for the case.

This is the first time any such incident has occurred with the figure.
