He wasn't invited, but that didn't stop an alligator from showing up to one Eagan family's Independence celebration Friday.
It didn't end well for him when police showed up, reports CBS station WCCO-TV in Minneapolis.
"When I found him he was just laying right up here somewhere, just sunning himself on the grass," said Linda Savage.
Savage has seen some a lot of wildlife her 20 years living near a pond in Eagan. Deer, fox, and mink, but not something like this.
"We got closer and it was an alligator and I just couldn't believe it," she recalled.
But there he was, all 3-and-a-half feet of him. After her family gave him some apples to eat, Savage knew it was time to call police.
"I told the dispatcher, 'I have to start out telling you I have not been drinking, but there is an alligator in my backyard,'" smiled Savage.
It took a few officers to get the gator. They had to duct tape his mouth to stay safe.
Animal Control had the day off Friday, so the he had to spend some time in the Eagan jail.
Now, the Savage family will get back to celebrating their independence ... after the alligator lost his.
"I couldn't believe it. I thought, 'Am I really seeing this?'" said Savage.
The gator is now with the Department of Natural Resources.
Officers believe someone had it as a pet and tried to get rid of it.
