The Scoop: Southside Park Pool
R.E. Graswich
SACRAMENTO (OPINION) ―
This is the public swimming pool at Southside Park in Sacramento. It's quiet on this chilly December day, but come summer, it will be packed with neighborhood kids. Or will it? The city's broke, and this pool could stay closed all summer, and the police are worried about it.
What do cops have to do with swimming pools? Plenty. Police chief Rick Braziel tells me he's worried about closing youth facilities in certain neighborhoods, like the pool here in Southside. The chief says kids will get in trouble if they don't have recreational facilities, especially in the summertime.
This dilemma shows the big problem with the city's budget crisis. A lot of people think, go ahead, close the pool, it's not essential. But ask the police chief what's essential to keep the city safe, and he'll point to this swimming pool in Southside Park.
