The Scoop: Sir Charles Here To Help?

You can tell the Sacramento Mayor's race is heating up again when we start talking about an appearance by Charles Barkley, the legendary basketball raconteur. Mr. Barkley is coming to Sacramento in a couple of weeks to help raise money for his buddy, mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson.

Fundraisers for local politicians are typically pretty mundane affairs. People pay $100 or more to stand around, eat some cheese and crackers, have a glass of beer, and leave. It should be different with Charles Barkley in the room.

Mr. Barkley says he might run for governor of Arkansas - or is it Alabama? I can't remember - but he's always fun. Shaquille O'Neal is also expected in Sacramento on behalf of Johnson. Mayor Heather Fargo says she also has a couple of fund-raisers planned, but hasn't listed them on her Web site yet.
