One of the ways I've stayed busy during the state budget deadlock is by making sure the state is still running smoothly. Legislators at the capitol wrapped up their 2008 session over Labor Day weekend without a new spending plan, but I'm still hard a work.
One way I check on California is to make sure new state jobs are still being posted. They are - despite talk about hiring freezes and wage reductions. In the last two weeks, 855 state jobs were posted by various personnel departments.
Some of these jobs are for current state workers only, but others are open to anyone. I found two jobs I liked -- one a chaplain at Pelican Bay Prison ($4,800 per month) and two -- a ferryboat captain in Rio Vista ($3,800). I bet I could take either one of those jobs and turn them into a screenplay.
