The Scoop: Sac PD Pay Cut

R.E. Graswich
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The city of Sacramento - broke and desperate - is asking its police force to give up a five percent pay raise that's promised this summer. The cops are saying shove it, we want our raise.

The cops union says a deal is a deal, and the city has got to honor its word. Cops aren't in the habit of backing down, and they aren't backing down on their pay raise.

What happens next? The city says it might have to lay off cops, most likely the newest rookies. The union says - go ahead, we dare you.

It's a mess, and it could be yet another embarrassment to Mayor Kevin Johnson, who made public safety his top priority during the campaign - and who still has strong backing from the police union.

I've got Detective Mark Tyndale here, vice-president of the Sacramento police union. He says there's no backing down on the pay raise because the city has lied to the union in recent years.

Get ready for a showdown in Sacramento. The city needs concessions or could start laying off cops. The cops won't budge. And the mayor, who based his campaign on keeping the streets safe, is caught in the crossfire.
