The Scoop: Race Horses At The State Fair

COMMENTARY (CBS13) ― The State Fair opens Friday, and one of the big attractions this year will be the return of thoroughbred racing to Cal Expo. But before you load up the kids, you might want to consider this fact – there's a reasonable chance you'll see a race horse get killed at the State Fair, right in front of you.

Nobody else will tell you this, but here are the facts: Last year in California, 301 horses were killed at race tracks, some during training, most while racing. The Pomona County Fair had 11 horses die in just over two weeks. The Santa Rosa Fair has five fatalities.

Why do they die? Some experts say it's the breeding. Others say too many sick horses are running. And there are concerns about the track surface. If a thoroughbred takes one wrong step and breaks a leg, that's usually the end. I'll tell you what you can expect at Cal Expo and what they're doing about it – tomorrow on the Scoop.
