The Scoop: Race Horses At The State Fair Pt. II

SACRAMENTO (EDITORIAL) ― Most of the year, you can find harness horses trotting at Cal Expo. They're strong animals and almost never break down. Thoroughbreds with jockeys on their backs are a different story. Every year in California, around 300 of them die on our racetracks - all for the enjoyment of gamblers.

If you come to Cal Expo when the thoroughbred races start next week, there's a chance you'll see a race horse get killed. The last time thoroughbreds ran at Cal Expo, in 2004, three died at the Fair. In 2003, seven horses died during the State Fair

What are officials doing about this? They know most deaths are caused by broken bones, so they're introducing synthetic track surfaces. But that won't solve the problem entirely. My solution? I've loved horse racing for 30 years, but I'll never watch another one. If people stop supporting this blood sport, the problem solves itself.
