The Scoop: Big Fix Hidden Costs

SACRAMENTO (OPINION) ― You remember back in May, when we began hearing about a radical plan to fix I-5 in Old Sacramento by shutting down the freeway. The plan would be quicker and cheaper than fixing the freeway the old fashioned way, lane by lane.

Today the job is mostly finished, but we're only now beginning to learn how much the big fix really cost. In some cases, the experts were clueless about the actual cost to the taxpayers. I've learned some estimates were off by more than 100 percent.

The city of Sacramento figured it would spend $300,000 on the project, including overtime for traffic police. Now the city wants $800,000 from Cal Trans in reimbursement -- way more than anyone figured. Seems they didn't use a computer to calculate the expenses -- they used a dartboard and a blindfold.
