Swine Flu Feared For Dozens Of Elk Grove Students

ELK GROVE (CBS13) ― Thousands of parents in Elk Grove were notified Wednesday that dozens of students at one high school came down with flu-like symptoms in a possible outbreak of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.

At least 80 students at Franklin High School did not attend school Wednesday after exhibiting symptoms that health officials suspect could be consistent with the swine flu. The outbreak does not appear to be centered around any one class or grade level.

Health experts say 90 percent of flu-like cases reported recently have been diagnosed as the swine flue.

"We've had a number of students out ill, but this is probably the largest we've had at this point," said Liz Graswich from the Elk Grove School District.

Sacramento County just received 10,000 swine flu vaccines and officials are beginning to make plans on distributing the vaccine to those who are at greatest risk.

Schools with licensed personnel will be allowed to vaccinate students in the coming weeks, possibly including four schools in the Elk Grove School District that have not been revealed yet.
