High School Soccer Player Dies After Practice

ANTELOPE (CBS13) ― A freshman high school soccer player collapsed and died after practice at Center High School in Antelope, according to the school.

The Junior Varsity player collapsed after practice at the school yesterday at around 5:00 p.m.  He was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where he died in the emergency room.

The Sacramento County Coroner's office has identified the student as 14-year-old Brandon Mitchell Baker. The coroner's office has not released the cause of death, but said that Baker did not have any known medical conditions.

The teen's father, William Baker cannot believe his son is gone.

"I told him how much I loved him.  I'll always love him. He was a great son," says William.

William got the call from his wife that emergency crews were doing CPR to bring him back.  When he eventually made it to the hospital he told the doctor to give it to him straight.

"I looked him right in the eye and said is he dead, and he said yes," explained William.

According to the school's website, the Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer teams were scheduled to play a game today at 3:30 p.m. against Mira Loma High School; however, CBS13 has learned that game has been canceled.
