Kings Tickets A Harder Sell Due To Economy
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Don't think the world of sports is immune to the problems on Wall Street. The Sacramento Kings are coming off a season in which they registered their lowest attendance in 20 years, while boasting the leagues 7th highest average ticket prices. So with a team not expected to contend, and the state of the economy, will fans pay to see them play?
Arco Arena's a long way from Wall Street, but the economic crisis has hit home for Kings fans.
"I love the Kings, love to go to games, but it's a lot of money to spend," says one Kings fan.
Mitch Germann VP of Business Communications for Maloof Sports and Entertainment says fans aren't the only ones feeling the pinch.
"Its made selling full season tickets very challenging under the current economic conditions," Mitch explains.
That means more empty seats and not just in Sacramento. League attendance is down, while TV ratings have gone up.
"It's much cheaper to watch at home and order a pizza," says Sabrina Laffan, a Kings fan.
According to the NBA Basketball Ticket Fan Cost Index, a family of four would spend over $318 to see a Kings game. Still we found plenty of fans who say they're willing to pony up.
"That's priceless, you gotta pay to go see them," says one fan.
