Save With Dave: Save Green On Used Electronics
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
It works for cars, so why not electronics? Tonight's Save with Dave looks at an option that many people don't know about.
If a new car is out of your price range, you might not think twice about buying a used one. So why not go for used iPods and computers to save some money?
The newest models and gadgets will always be out front.
"I like new stuff, cause it comes out, it's new, you know, you know it works," says one consumer.
But if you dig a little, you'll find the used or refurbished section on computer and electronic company websites.
"To save money, me and my husband is an ex-mechanic and buys refurbished parts all the time," says one woman.
Apple offers used iPods Nano's at 33 percent below the price of a new one.
There are similar offers on Dell and Hewlitt-Packard websites. In most cases you can get free shipping to add to the bargain.
A lot of products come with a one year warranty, but you can buy extended service packages just like with new products.
"I might buy a refurbished one or maybe buy an open box item at another store, they come with the same warranty, they're guaranteed to be used, so you can't really lose too much on them," one consumer explains.
Some of the refurbished items are deep within a company internet site, so we put some of them on our website, CBS13.com.
If you were to get a refurbished iPod Nano, a Dell laptop and an HP pocket computer, you would save about $260 off the list price and that's a 20 percent savings.
