Save With Dave: Red Box Saves Green
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
It's as easy as one, two, three.
"Easiest, best way I've ever found a rental movie," says consumer Danny Gilbert, as he walks away from the Redbox at Wal-Mart in West Sacramento, with video in-hand.
The Redbox is a video vending machine. It offers DVD movies cheaper than its competition
"It's a lot cheaper. It's only a dollar eight," says Charles Woods, who walks away empty handed; the Redbox didn't have anything he was interested in.
"Beats four, five, eight dollars, whatever it is at Blockbuster nowadays."
Redboxes are appearing all over, at places like grocery stores and fast food joints, so it's convenient.
"I get my shopping done and pick up a movie or two and keep everyone happy" says Gilbert.
Here's how it works.
Go to a red box near you.
Tap the touch-screen to browse the movie selection. It's got a little something for everyone, even the kids.
On-screen directions guide you every step of the way.
Once you've picked your flicks, insert a credit or debit card, and tap in your zip code -- a buck, plus tax, per movie and that's it.
Out pops your movie, and you have until nine the next night to watch it; keep it 25 days and you own it.
And you can return it to any Redbox you want.
So let's do the math.
Say you rent three movies a week.
Most Blockbuster movies are $4.96 with tax; Redbox -- $1.08.
That's $12.96 a month versus $59.52 at Blockbuster.
You'll save more than $46 a month at the Redbox if you return the movie on time; it's a buck extra per night.
