Save With Dave: Amtrak Shipping

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Trains, they aren't just for people anymore! In fact, it's also a low-cost way to ship your bulky boxes.

Amtrak offers this great deal called 'Station-to-Station' service. It's a way to ship packages cheaper than what other companies charge.

Let's say you're shipping a 100 pound package from Sacramento to Los Angeles. Amtrak would charge $34 and it would arrive within 24 hours.

Shipping that same box through UPS would take twice as long and cost you almost $70.

At Fed-Ex, you would pay a little less, $61.29, and arriving in two business days.

And its $52.99 if you use DHL's two day delivery service.

So how does Amtrak shipping work?

Drop off your package at the nearest station. There's just one catch, the person receiving the shipment needs to personally pick it up within 48 hours.

Customers save because the cost for pickup and delivery are avoided.

And because Amtrak Express is more fuel efficient than other modes, rates haven't been severely impacted by the recent fuel price spikes.

So if you use Amtrak's Express delivery as opposed to a more traditional shipping method, you could save as much as $35.29, and guarantee your package arrives within one day.
