Save With Dave: Clean Your Dryer Vent
by Dave Bender
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
You've heard an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's a way you can cut down your energy bill and even more importantly, save lives.
It's something we never expect to happen in our own homes, a fire, especially one caused by dryers. But it does happen.
"15,500 fires annually start because of lint accumulation, 370 injures, 20 deaths and that's what's reported," says Gina Fazil, owner of Dryer Went Wizard.
That's a big concern for homeowner, Dana Kelly.
"I have been hearing about dryer vent fires and I hear about it for a while and I worry about it and I take action," says Kelly.
So Dana called "Dryer Vent Wizard", a company that comes out to your house to check, clean and repair your dryer vent.
"What you do not want to use is we have plastic right here, this is no longer up to code, the plastic. What it does, it collapses and it holds lint," says Fazil.
Plastic and aluminum foil vents are huge fire hazards. Instead, you should use a rigid or semi-rigid vent.
The cost of this job is about $118. But keeping your dryer vent clean has another plus.
"It will lower your energy cost by $18-$24 dollars a month," says Fazil.
But that's not Dana's main concern.
"Just peace of mind. Knowing that I'm not going to have a dryer vent fire, I'm actually more excited about that than the energy cost saving just because I don't want to lose everything that I have in a fire," she says.
