Save With Dave: Save $160 On College Applications

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Some schools are charging upwards of $70 just to apply! But if you do a little investigating, you might be able to avoid those fees altogether.

Buckling down and applying for college is not much fun, there's the SAT's and ACT's, the lengthy applications, the essays and the fees!

If you can't afford to shell out hundreds of dollars for your student to apply to his or her favorite schools, you might be able to get waivers.

Households with incomes less than $40,000 a year qualify. Have your student ask their counselor about it.

Even if your family isn't experiencing financial difficulty, you might be able to apply to college for free.

A number of schools are waiving the fee to applicants who skip the paperwork and apply online. In some cases, application feed can be waived if you take a tour of the college, or if you have alumni of the school in your family or are eligible to receive financial aid or scholarships.

Like any saving money strategy, it never hurts to ask. Do some digging on the school's website or call the admissions office and ask if they have any programs you're not aware of.

If the average college application fee runs around $40 and your high school senior applies to four colleges, you could save about $160 by getting those fees waived.
