The Scoop: Christmas In Old Sacramento

(EDITORIAL) People love to make fun of Old Sacramento, with all its T-shirt stores and candy shops. But this holiday season, Old Sac has never looked better. When it comes to putting on the Christmas trimmings and building the holiday spirit, Old Sacramento is second to none.

I enjoy seeing how cities and towns dress up for Christmas. I watched them putting up the tree in Union Square in San Francisco. I've already checked out Folsom, Amador City and Jackson to see their Christmas displays. I even went to Marysville and Smartsville. None could hold a candle to Old Sacramento.

I don't know whether the sourdoughs went all out decorating Old Sac during Christmas seasons in the 1800s. Second Street probably didn't resemble this image in 1880. But so what? If Old Sac didn't look exactly like this 120 years ago, we can pretend it did.
