Call Kurtis: Clearly Missing Carats

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) ― An Elk Grove couple bought what they thought was a diamond ring.
When they found out it wasn't what they expected, they called Kurtis.

They went to Devons Jewelers in Roseville to buy an engagement ring.

Two months later, they found out the big stone in the middle wasn't a diamond but a cubic zirconia.

Lisa Cuddeback is engaged but her ring finger is bare.

"I can't wear it, yeah it's a beautiful ring but when I look at it, it hurts," says Lisa.

"When I was able to give it to her, I felt the best thing in the world. Now, it's just gone," says Warren Violett, Lisa's fiance.

Lisa and Warren went shopping at Devons Jewelers in Roseville in April.

One ring caught their eye.

"It's perfect. He said it's one and a half carat stone and a round setting is a one carat, so total setting is two and a half carats total weight," says Lisa.

A few weeks later, they agreed to buy it for $4,730.01 and put down $1,000 deposit.

On July 4th, they picked up the ring and broke their engagement news to their parents.

"They were like that's great, did you get the appraisal paperwork? And Warren and I both looked at each other, what's appraisal?" asked Lisa.

Lisa called Devons and was told it would be mailed to them.

Two months later, still no appraisal and her center stone became loose.

Lisa went back to Devons. That's when a store manager pointed out her ring was not a diamond.

"He's like no, that's a CZ. I said a what? He's all cubic zirconia. I said no, it's not, it's a diamond," says Lisa.

Lisa says the manager insisted his sales representative told them but they deny that.

"I lost my breath, I couldn't stand, I just stared and I felt like I had been hit in the stomach. I couldn't breathe and I just started crying because I knew that Warren didn't know," says Lisa.

Devons wouldn't refund their money because it was specially ordered in Lisa's size and offered an exchange instead.

Lisa then got us involved.

"This has never happened before, this is a first," says Robert Hewitt, Store Manager, Devons Jewelers in Roseville.

Robert tells us Lisa and Warren should've received an appraisal earlier but insists Devons did nothing wrong.

"We always bring up the fact that the center stone is in fact a CZ, cubic zirconia, not a diamond, they are sold separately," says Robert.

He pointed out the order form with the words "CZ Center" circled, with Warren's signature.

And showed us the designer rings with tags that say "CZ Center."

But two weeks later, the store owner emailed Lisa personally, saying getting engaged should be the "happier moments in one's life" and offered a full refund.

"I was shocked, I read it twice, he really changed his mind and I double read it and I just started screaming. I got on the phone, called my parents and Warren. We were all just very happy," says Lisa.

Lisa was so happy, she and Warren went to a different Devons Jewelers store and bought a loose diamond there.

She shows us her new engagement ring and this one, with a diamond, that's forever.

"Happy... it's beautiful, it's great, we can actually move on and it's great now," says Lisa.

Devons tells us all their designer rings come with cubic zirconias and in their 80 year history, they've never had a customer not know they bought a cubic zirconia, until now. Before buying anything as valuable as a diamond, do your research. Learn about the four C's and shop around. And be sure to get a certified appraisal before walking out the door.
