Save With Dave: To Buy Or Not Buy The Warranty?
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
In tonight's Save with Dave, do you really need that extended warranty when you buy new electronics, like an HDTV?
The saleswoman always hits you with: Will you buy an extended warranty?
"I purchase it on things that I tend to break easily and frequently like CD players," says one consumer.
But is that plan worth it? According to C-Net.com, that depends. Everything you buy comes with what's called an 'implied' warranty, which means it shouldn't be defective, and generally that warranty lasts forever.
If you're asked to buy an 'extended warranty,' you're essentially paying for what you already have a warranty for factory defects.
But if you buy a "service plan," that often pays for other things, like if you break your new blue ray DVD player, or the kids shoot bb's at your new plasma screen.
But even those aren't worth it if you're paying hundreds for service and a it's $60 DVD player.
Bottom line? Check the wording to see if everything's covered by a service agreement!
Remember, it's the service agreement you want, so read the contracts before saying yes or no.
So if you avoided that warranty plan, you'd save the average price for that plan which is about $80!
