Save With Dave: Haggling Prices

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― We're talking haggling, negotiating, asking for a lower price. And it works in some surprising situations!

Have you ever looked at a price tag and thought if only I could have that for less, well you can!

Just ask professional haggler Teri Gault. Teri makes a living helping others save money on her websites teritoday.com and grocerygame.com. She practices what she preaches and says she's easily saved thousands of dollars by following one simple rule.

"Always ask for a discount," she explains.

Teri says don't be embarrassed to ask. She wanted this t-shirt at Macy's in New York, but didn't want to pay $35 for it, so she kept asking.

"Are there any discounts at all, any coupons? I asked her can you think of anything that could help me get this t-shirt marked down a little, and that's when she said are you a visitor? And I was," Teri explains.

Turns out, Macy's has a policy of giving visitors discounts of 11%, and Teri got it.

And she says if the salesperson can't help you," on big ticket items I will ask for a manager. I wouldn't do that for a t-shirt," she says.

Asking for the manager got Teri $10 off a Nikon Camera, plus 25% off its accessories.

"So I walked out saving myself around $40."

But here come the best buy of the day. Teri always suggests using internet prices as leverage to get a price reduction. But in this case, at Best Buy, they matched the best price she found online for a Garmin GPS.

Best Buy's price was $449, she got it for $269!

You don't know what kind of discounts you can get unless you ask. Teri got a savings of $180 just because she asked!
