Save With Dave: How To Save On Produce
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Tonight, I'll show you an easy way to save on everyday fruits and veggies.
You don't always need to pay for your produce per pound.
Some 99 Cent stores now offer fresh fruits and veggies. And you guessed it, for 99 cents!
Not only will you find the basics, like carrots, potatoes, and lettuce, but also items like mangos, strawberries, peppers and cantaloupes.
So how can the store afford to sell it for such a deal?
There are a couple things to remember when shopping for fresh food.
"There are different grades; you know the USDA has a standard grade, choice grade, fancy and extra fancy. Of course, your extra fancy that's the best of the best, it's going to last the longest," says produce man, Michael Marks.
We wanted to know how these cheaper fruits and veggies stack up to the stuff at your standard grocery store?
"The further down you go, you have quality that's fine, but its not going to last as long. You can get some great deals, the product may be smaller, it may be a little more crooked, but use them up right away, because you're not going to have quite the shelf life that you're used to ," says Marks.
From the things we bought at the 99 Cent Store, we saw a savings as large as three times what you would pay at a regular grocery store.
For example, a container of organic tomatoes is regularly $3.99; we found them for only 99 cents, that's a $3 savings!
