Save With Dave: Recycling Money

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Extra money may be hiding in your garbage can!

"I had about three quarters of a trashcan of aluminum and three of plastic and one of glass," says Jessica Kegg. "They just gave me $19 and some change."

Cashing in on cans and bottles won't make you a millionaire, but these days every little bit helps.

For a pound of plastic bottles, you'll get $0.90 and $1.56 for a pound of cans.

"We try to (cash in) at least three times a month, and we get about $7 each time," says Kathy Duncan.

It may not sound like a lot, but people we talked to are finding plenty of ways to spend the cash.

"About as fast as we get it we have to use it for gas," says Darrell McMilliam.

So instead of throwing your recyclables into a bin for your garbage man, you may want to try cashing in on your cans!

One woman we talked to told us she makes about $25 a month recycling. In a year, that's an extra $300 a year back in her pocket.
