Save With Dave: How To Save On European Vacations

FOLSOM (CBS13) ― "Glasgow is one of the neatest cities," says Jim.

Folsom resident Jim Enos and his wife Deanna have been traveling the world for the past 18 years. During that time, he's learned some secrets of saving.

"What made write the book is that people would ask me, how the heck you can afford on a teacher's retirement to travel to Europe and do it twice a year at a month at a time," Jim says.

Jim is now sharing his secrets in his book "Jim's Guide to Cheap Travel in Europe." Aside from finding cheap fares online, one big way to save is to find alternative accommodations.

"Apartments can be so much better," Jim tells us.

For example, a one week stay in Paris next April would cost more than $3,000 in a four star hotel. A three star hotel is more than $1,600. A small hotel would cost you just $490. An apartment would cost $610.

"Just go off the main tourist drag, go where the people who live there go," Jim explains.

When exchanging money, use an ATM card. You'll get the best exchange rates but make sure you have money in your checking account.

Also, watch out for pickpockets. Don't read a map with lots of people around and stash your cash in a money belt or a zippered front pocket.

"I think they take time off. I think they make so much money in the summer that they take time off when the off season is here, when they put their kids back in school," Jim said.

If you would like to learn more money saving tips, just go to CBS13.com for a link to Jim's website and information on buying his book.

Just by staying in an apartment versus a four star hotel for a week in Paris, you'd save $2,540.
