Save With Dave: Save $100 On Gift Cards
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
They're the easy gift, sometimes the last minute gift, but before you start picking up gift cards for the holidays, try these strategies to get more for your money.
The Consumer Federation of America says consumers will spend $50 billion on gift cards this year. But, we don't have to spend that much if we're smart about how we buy them.
It's easy to get a discounted gift card. One of the first places you'll want to look is on gift card websites like "Plasticjungle.com and "certificateswap.com. Just make sure the site where you shop guarantees that the cards are valid.
Restaurant.com and citydeals.com also sell cards less than face value, or they'll throw in "extra value" cards to sweeten the deal.
And don't forget to check out your warehouse store. Costco, for example sells cards for a bunch of restaurants. Face value is $100, but members just pay $80.
Sometimes the gift cards even come free! "Points" or "miles" you've earned through your credit card can often be exchanged for gift cards.
Or take a look at the weekly circulars. Big box stores like Target and Wal-Mart frequently give away gift cards when you buy certain electronics or household items. This week Wal-Mart is handing out $100 gift cards to people who buy a Blackberry.
As always with gift cards, you want to ask about any charges or fees the users may incur and whether or not they expire.
If you're in the market for a new phone and carrier contract, that deal at Wal-Mart can't be beat; a $100 gift card for free!
