Save With Dave: Alterations
We all like to dress in style but with the cost of clothing these days it can get pretty expensive. Here's one way to save money and shop in your closed.
The key to saving money on a new wardrobe is making your old stuff new again.
Whether it's repairing a favorite hat or altering a dress, alterations on your existing wardrobe can save you money. Just ask Debby Burchett, owner of Alterations Express in Folsom.
"They've got really expensive clothes that they don't want to throw out so they come in," said Debby Burchett, Alterations Express.
It's cheaper to reinvent what you have than to buy new. For example, a bridesmaids dress. Debby says for as little as $14 you can turn it into a cocktail dress -- wear it to a party, or out to dinner.
"When you get tired of it being a cocktail dress you can cut if off and make a blouse out of it," said Debby.
You can even add jewels or studs to give it a unique look.
"Same thing you'd get at Bebe's or any other nice store," said Debbie.
Costs can vary, but a new cocktail dress can easily run $150.00. Taking a single lined bridesmaid dress and shortening it costs $14.00, saving you $136.00.
