Save With Dave: Couponmom.com
(CBS13)
How much do you spend on groceries a week? $100? $150? What if you could do it for under a $100? Stephanie Nelson, a mom of four, calls it strategic shopping, and it saves her hundreds a month! She is one calculating customer.
"I love grocery shopping!" Nelson said.
Nelson is just maybe, the greatest grocery shopper ever.
"I'm getting four boxes for about the price of one box," Nelson said about her purchase. "I have a coupon for $.50 which they double. So I get it for $.19."
"I have a coupon for a $1 off, so it's absolutely free," Nelson added.
So then she turned her coupon hobby into a free web site, Grocerymom.com. The website lists local supermarket bargains across America.
"Particularly with women, I think when we leave our careers and you find something intellectually challenging that actually results in a profit," Nelson said. "It's a way I was financially contributing to the good of my family. And I felt good about that."
The moment of truth came for Nelson as she walked to the checkout with a full cart of groceries.
"This is the fun part," Nelson said as she approached the checkout stand.
"Some people actually pay $117," Nelson said about her purchase.
But with her coupons and store promotions, she paid just $23. That's an 81 percent discount.
"It's kind of a thrill. Is that pathetic? Having a thrill at the grocery stores," Nelson said about the anticipation to see what she saved.
Nelson also added up her savings over the month, using bargains from stores on the website Couponmom.com. She saved $376 in four weeks.
