Save With Dave: $230 Off Electricity Bill
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
They may seem simple, but we have five easy steps that can cut major costs on your bill.
The folks at Kiplinger Magazine came up with several ways you can lower those bills, even in the summer heat! First, though we've said it before, changing your bulbs to compact fluorescents not only saves you $60 per light for the life of the bulb, ninety percent of regular light bulbs' energy is lost in heat, so you cool down your house, too!
Second, unplug the appliances! If you have anything with a clock, remote or "standby" 40 percent of its electricity is used when it's off, so unplug it, or get a "smart" power strip that cut off electricity when they're off.
Third, insulate your water heater! If yours was made before 2004, an insulating jacket will save you about $30 a year.
Fourth, still on that water heater, lower the temp to about 120 degrees and you'll save on heating costs.
Last, look at investing in a drip system for your yard. You can cut your water waste in half, and cut your bill, too!
Now everybody's savings will vary, but our producer averaged all of his bills and he'd save about $230.
