Save With Dave: Cell Phone Deals
Many people love all the features on a cell phone, but if you're like me, all you want a cell phone for is an occasional call or an emergency. We've found some bare bones deals.
Cell phone extras are fun, but they'll cost you extra. If all you want is a two-way conversation, trim the fat. Most wireless phone companies have bare-bones plans that'll save you cash.
AT&T has what it calls the "Go-Phone", prepaid phones that start at a buck for each day you actually use your phone, plus 10 cents per minute.
Verizon has a similar pay-as-you-go plan. On this one you only pay for the days you use your phone. Use it on, let's say, Friday, and you 99 cents for that day.
It also has a plan for those 65 and over that starts at $29 a month. And AARP has a plan for its members with rates starting at $10.
Dial-in on that savings!
Know that 911 is free from any mobile phone; it doesn't require a service plan
Let's compare AT&T's Go-Phone rates with a well-equipped plan. Let's say you make a call every other day for the month -- that's 15-days at two minutes a call -- it would cost you $18 versus $104 using an iPhone with data and messaging plans. That's a savings of $86 a month.
