Save With Dave: Folsom Museum

FOLSOM (CBS13) ― Americans have been hit hard by the recession and so have museums. But the Folsom History Museum hopes to keep people coming in by offering admission for under a buck.

Folsom may be known nation-wide for Johnny Cash's 1956 concert at Folsom Prison, but the city's history goes back more than a century earlier.

"Folsom came to be because it's a gold rush community, settled by the miners. We also were the terminus of the Pony Express which was a phenomenal piece of history that only lasted 18 months and yet everybody knows about it."

Fewer people are visiting the Folsom History Museum these days, skipping a lesson in history after learning a tough lesson in economics.

:"We're feeling it in our renewals for membership; we're seeing it in donations."

So starting March 21st, adult admission will be reduced from $5 to $4. But, if you go any Friday in March, you can get in for just 50 cents.

"Because we want people to visit, you know, do something fun, not concentrating on the bad news, or the good news or whatever, just learn a little history it seemed like a great offer to do."

The museum showcases artifacts from throughout the city's history. It also has a room that changes exhibits up to five times a year.

And of course there's a Johnny Cash tribute, which leads us to the museum's "Singing John!"

"We have a cell block door. And when you go into our bathroom, you can hear Johnny Cash sing."

Take advantage of the 50 cent Friday admission and four people can get into the museum for just $2. That's $18 dollars cheaper than the current admission.
