Save With Dave: Online Colleges
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
So, you want to go to college, but you don't have the time or the money to attend a traditional campus? There's a cheaper, more convenient option where you could even attend class in your pajamas if you want to.
Jacquie Bucher wants to be a teacher.
"I work full time. I have two kids, full time. I'm a Girl Scout leader. I'm very busy, so I needed something that worked into my schedule, not me having to work my schedule around it," says Jacquie.
So, Bucher and her husband, John, attend college online at Western Governors University where you get your degree when you prove to the WGU faculty how competent you are in your field of study.
"No, this is not an easy degree," says President and CEO, Pamela Tate.
Pamela Tate, President and CEO of the non-profit adult learning organization, Cael believes accredited online universities, like WGU, can be even more demanding than brick-and-mortar colleges. She says they're the wave of the future.
"If want our economy to be successful, we have to have alternatives like this," says Pamela.
WGU is also affordable. Tuition is about $3000 for six months of study, but at WGU you might be able to finish faster than actually going to classes at another school, which lowers your total bill.
"Each person's gonna go at their own pace, some people will go faster based on this and some people will take the full six months to do their classes," says John.
Unlike regular classes and universities, E-books are included in that $3000 tuition.
So an online school like WGU could save you upwards of $3600 a year in tuition and book costs compared to attending a public university here in California.
