Buying a computer costs enough! Buying all the programs to make it run better might cause you to crash on the information superhighway. But, you can get a lot of that software for free!

There are a lot of anti-virus software programs out there, but there are good programs that are free if you don't want to shell out the dough.

AVG Antivirus Spybot Search and Destroy and ad-aware are great downloads that will hunt down both viruses and spyware!

Looking to work with PDF documents? Instead of paying for the full-price version of a certain program, look at Primo PDF Converter. It's free and does most everything the full price name brand does.

Need a word processor? We've told you about this one; Google's "Open Office" does a lot of the same things as Microsoft's Office for Word, Excel and the like. And again, all free!

Lastly, need software? Check out C-Net's Download.com. Everything from drivers, games and even office software are there on the company's site, and there's no pesky spyware, and again it's all free!

Try to buy even the regular virus software and you'll pay a bundle for the services these free programs do.

In fact, it'll cost you $49.95 for software alone, and more if you tried to buy all the software in our story.
