Save With Dave: Save With SMUD & PG&E Programs

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Both SMUD and PG&E have a number of programs that you may not be aware of. Here's how you can qualify.

Winter's just around the corner and that means your energy bills will be going up, again.

SMUD has an energy assistance program that would cut your monthly bills by 30 percent.

"We now have 90,000 people on the program. Last year at this time, we had 70,000 people," says Janis Foreman.

For example, a family of four making $43,200 or less would qualify.

PG&E has a similar program called CARE, or California Alternate Rates for Energy, where qualified customers get 20 percent off their bills.

There are also programs with the Salvation Army that offers a $200 credit once a year and free weatherizations.

"The idea is to put energy efficient products in the home," says Janis.

This includes weather stripping, caulking, installing compact fluorescent bulbs and replacing old refrigerators and air conditioners.

No matter how bad things get, the worst thing you can do is do nothing.

"Please stay in touch with SMUD, we are here to help and we don't want to see people get disconnected. You can call and make payment arrangements," Janis explains.

Both SMUD and PG&E also have programs to help people with medical conditions.

If you qualify and your average household bill is around $100, you would save $30 a month on your SMUD bill.
