Save With Dave: Save $1000 For The Holidays
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A thousand dollars could really help pay for those holiday gifts, right? Well, here are a few things you can do to stash away a grand before Christmas.
Maybe you're not in the jingle bell mood yet, but keep it in the back of your mind because now is the time to start saving for the holidays.
Yahoo Finance came up with six steps you can take to put away $1000 in two months.
First, adjust your tax withholding. If you got a refund last year, that means you overpaid the government. Fill out a new W-4 form and based on the average Americans refund, you could put away $450 before Christmas.
Next, take fewer trips to the grocery store that cuts down on impulse buys. Instead of shopping three or four times a week, get everything in one weekly trip and you could save $160 on the stuff you don't need.
If you make those planned trips to the grocery store, you can probably skip going out to eat. A family of four could save $120 by resolving to eat at home one more time per month.
When it comes to home heating, lower the thermostat two degrees and you could put away $60 before Christmas.
Next, why not kick the habit? It might be hard, but skipping your daily latte or vending machine fix could save up to $120.
Finally, take a look at your phone and cable use. Drop $50 of extras or even your land line and that's $100 more in your pocket.
Let's say you stick to those budget guidelines for the next two months, it all adds up to $1010 to help you make it through the holidays.
