It's always a nice surprise, when you're buying something and the clerk offers you a free gift. But don't just hope for a freebie, shop where you know they're offered. Here's how to scope them out.

Stroll past any department store's cosmetic counter and you're bound to find a freebie. But if you're stuck on certain brands, you'll want to check out a couple of blogs to track the best deals.

Start with "Gift With Purchase Addict." The woman behind the blog tracks giveaways like a hawk, and updates her site daily. Just click on your favorite brand or store and up pops all the deals currently offered, some are in store, other are online coupon codes.

"My Gift With Purchase" is similar. Click on "Macys" for instance, and the site will link you to all the bonus offers in the store's beauty department.

Department store cosmetics are pricey enough. But the next time you shop for them, you can be sure you'll get a little more for your money.

The store often put a "value" on these free gifts. And we found a lot were valued around $50. Like we said, if you're going to spend a little more on this department store makeup, you may as well rake in some extra freebies.
