Former Mayor Yee Endorses Kevin Johnson

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Former Sacramento Mayor and current city council member Jimmie Yee is now endorsing Kevin Johnson in his bid for the Mayor's office.

Yee made the endorsement official this morning in a press conference at city hall.

"I am throwing my name into the race for mayor of the city of Sacramento," Sacramento City Councilmember Jimmie Yee told a crowd outside city hall this morning.

The high profile endorsement is a big "get" for Johnson in the heated battle with current mayor Heather Fargo.

"I think people clearly don't want business as usual. So track record and experience only take you so far," Kevin Johnson told CBS13 when asked if he was ready to run the city during such a critical time.

Both candidates have been battling behind the scenes for the support of local leaders.

Shortly after Yee's announcement, Mayor Heather Fargo addressed the media touting her successes in the city.

"There is a lot of change in the city itself.  A lot improvement in our communities and neighborhoods whether its parks, new libraries, community centers. But also in the number of jobs" Fargo said, "So I think there are a lot of good things going on. Now if they want a change of personality that's another thing."

When asked by CBS13 about his accessibility to the media, Kevin Johnson told CBS13's Elyce Kirchner, "I'll be as accessible as I can.  I haven't turned down one interview or one request."

Johnson is one of five candidates challenging Fargo as she runs for her third term as mayor.
