Report: DMV Wait Times Increase Due To Furloughs

DMV offices statewide are closed today for the state's first forced furlough day.
Take a number and wait....a lot longer. A new report shows the average wait time for services at the Department of Motor Vehicles is much longer due to state worker furloughs.
The Senate Office of Oversight and Outcome released the report today showing the average time a walk-in customer waits for service has gone from 27 minutes to 45 minutes since furloughs went into effect.
The report titled "
DMV Shifts into Reverse: Furlough Fridays Eliminate Gains in Service at Department of Motor Vehicles without Saving General Fund Money" also points out that the furlough days do not save the state any money because the department is funded by fees on motorists and federal money.
Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg says the longer wait times reverse a successful 2004 effort by the Schwarzenegger administration to cut average wait times from nearly an hour to less than 30 minutes.
"One of the Governor's biggest achievements that has made life a little easier for Californians was reducing long lines at the DMV and improving their services," Steinberg said. "Now without saving any money from the state's budget he has single handedly wiped out those effective improvements."
DMV officials say the furloughs have created a backlog on license applications, investigation and audits.
