Sacramento Zoo Zebra Dies At Age 26
SACRAMENTO (AP) ―
A zebra who has spent her entire life at the Sacramento Zoo died Wednesday.
Shani, a Grevy's zebra, was born at the zoo in 1983. She gave birth to six foals during her life. Zoo keepers say Shani was showing signs of weakness and was disorientated Wednesday morning. After being examine by the veterinary staff, she was humanely euthanized.
Hoof stock keeper, Lindsay Moseanko said, "She was the 'leader of the pack' for the herd and would show the newer zebras the ropes. She was a character and a fabulous mother she will truly be missed."
According to the zoo, Grevy's zebras usually live between 20 and 30 years. A necropsy will be performed.
