A harbor porpoise has died after efforts to try to save it when it became stranded in a shallow creek far from the open ocean.
A spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center says a rescue crew was able to pull the porpoise from Santa Clara's San Tomas Aquinas Creek yesterday afternoon.
The bleeding animal was loaded into an emergency vehicle, but it died en route to the center.
The center's spokesman says bleeding is common when mammals like porpoises, dolphins and whales are stranded because their organs begin to decompress.
A necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, and veterinarians will be able to learn more about the species.
Officials don't know how the animal could have ended up in the creek.
