World's Tallest Dog Dies From Cancer
Gibson, The 7-Year-Old, From Grass Valley Had Been Battling Bone Cancer
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
The world's tallest dog has died after battling cancer. Gibson, the seven-year-old Great Dane from Grass Valley died last week.
Gibson had been battling bone cancer since he was diagnosed in April of this year. A few weeks later, he had his front right leg amputated to prevent the spread of the cancer.
Gibson's owner talked with CBS13's Tony Lopez about a month after the surgery about the diagnosis.
"One day, I was clipping his toe nails and he had a little swelling on his wrist," said Sandy Hall, Gibson's owner.
Sandy had it checked out right away, and the news wasn't good: Gibson had cancer in his bones, and doctors needed to amputate his front right leg immediately to stop the spread of the disease.
The news was devastating for Sandy, who has raised "Gibby" from his days as a tiny puppy to the 180-pound giant who tops seven feet when he stands on his hind legs and is still an impressive four feet tall when standing on all fours.
Gibson has held the Guinness world record for more than five years.
Gibson continued with chemotherapy treatment but last week doctor's had found that cancer had spread to his lungs and spine.
"Last week Gibson began having trouble using his back legs. X-rays showed that the cancer had spread to his spine and his lungs. Ms. Hall made the very difficult decision based on her concern and love for Gibson to have him humanely euthanized. Gibson died peacefully in the loving arms of Ms. Hall," said Dr. Peter Walsh, Gibson's veterinarian.
Sandy Hall will continue to raise awareness about canine cancer through the Three Paws for the Cause foundation. Gibson's son Brewster will be joining Hall.
A new Web site,
www.remembergibson.com, has been established to promote Three Paws for the Cause and honor Gibson's memory. The Web site features a memorial page where fans can pay tribute to him and express their condolences.
Hall fully expects Brewster to take on Gibson's title of World's Tallest Dog. According to a press release, Brewster is already 38 inches tall at the shoulders, just 4.6 inches shorter than Gibson was when he earned the title of World's Tallest Dog when he was 2 years old, and is on par with Gibson's height at this age. He is 165 pounds, which is 40 pounds more than Gibson weighed on his first birthday.
