World's Tallest Dog Recovering From Amputation
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
The world's tallest dog is facing an uphill climb. Gibson, the seven-year-old Great Dane from Grass Valley, is battling cancer, and has lost one of his front legs as part of his treatment.
"One day, I was clipping his toe nails and he had a little swelling on his wrist," said Sandy Hall, Gibson's owner.
Sandy had it checked out right away, and the news wasn't good: Gibson had cancer in his bones, and doctors needed to amputate his front right leg immediately to stop the spread of the disease.
The news was devastating for Sandy, who has raised "Gibby" from his days as a tiny puppy to the 180-pound giant who tops seven feet when he stands on his hind legs and is still an impressive four feet tall when standing on all fours.
Gibson has held the Guinness world record for more than five years.
It's been seven weeks since Gibson's surgery, and although he isn't light on his feet, he's finding his balance on three feet -- Sandy calls it a "tri-pawd" stance.
Gibson will continue his chemotherapy treatment to make sure the cancer is wiped out. Doctors say they have to use a machine normally reserved for ponies to perform x-rays on the giant dog.
