It's Open Season On Squirrels In Sacramento Parks
SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) ―
Sacramento County has now cleared the way for people to poison squirrels. Local leaders say they have no other choice.
Some of you may look at their furry faces, bushy tails, and call them cute.
"I'm sure there are 1000's and 1000's of them, but they're awfully cute," said a park visitor.
Others want them to disappear.
"They get demanding. They almost snatched a cracker from one of our club members' girls hand and bit her. Not only that, as far as I know they carry disease, so we bate them," said Steve Brown with Sacramento Area Modelers.
The Sacramento Area Modelers are in charge of maintaining Gene Andal Park. It's a habitat reserve with strict regulations on preserving the ecosystem.
So why are they allowed to sprinkle this silent squirrel-killing bait that causes internal bleeding over a five day period? The county's agriculture commissioner has approved the death sentence at all county parks years ago.
"They'll eat just about anything they'll even chew into irrigation systems," said Frank Carl, county agriculture commissioner.
People who love these tiny critters say there has to be a better way to control them. The county is been allowing this for years, but many people say they've never heard of poisoning ground squirrels. Many of them just don't agree with it.
