Animal Shelters Overcrowded, More Pets Face Death
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Sacramento animal shelters are so overcrowded that pets are practically being given away and young animals are being euthanized. Normally, older and sick cats are destroyed first, but now even kittens are in danger.
"These guys are on what we call the euthanasia list," said Claudia Schlachter of Sacramento Animal Care Services.
It's a crowded list that now includes kittens. Sick and older cats are typically put down first, but that's not clearing enough room.
"We are full, absolutely full," Claudia said.
The cages are stacked in every corner, even out in the lobby. Dozens of cats come in everyday. The numbers are heartbreaking, but for every 10 cats brought in only two will be adopted out.
The situation is so bad that first thing tomorrow morning, 17 cats and kittens are scheduled to be euthanized.
The shelter is willing to make a deal to end the death. Adopt one cat or kitten, get a second for free.
"Perfect thing to do because then the kitty has a companion for life," Claudia said.
With crowded cages, some cats are only held for 5 days. A new home would mean new life for felines facing the end of the line.
The $65 adoption fee includes both cats being spayed or neutered and they'll also get a license and a micro chip.
