Lodi Special Needs Dog Looking For A New Home
LODI, Calif. (CBS13) ―
Volunteers at a local animal shelter have their hands full. They're taking care of a little dog with some big problems.
He's a cute Pekinese mix and he's completely dependent on people like Pat Wakefield and the other volunteers at the people assisting Lodi shelter. Indy was born with an enlarged esophagus.
"And does not have enough muscles to send the food to his stomach," said Pat Wakefield, Lodi Pals representative.
That's where the help comes in. He's on a special diet of dog food softened with a mix of powder and water.
"We mash it very thoroughly," said Pat.
Indy has to eat four times a day while standing up straight. And he has to be held upright for 15 minutes after eating to make sure food settles in his stomach. It's a two hour total time commitment each day.
"Other than that he's a normal little boy," said Pat.
He likes to play with his brother. But, Indy's brother is being adopted, and now the shelter is searching for Indy's new home.
"It takes the time to find just the right person," said Pat.
Pat thinks they found the right person. A special family is taking in the dog with special needs. They're about to find out just how much love this little guy has inside him.
His new family is going to pick him up tomorrow.
