Lil' Smokey Doing Well, Out Of Hibernation

YREKA (AP) ― A young black bear that was rescued last summer from a Northern California wildfire is doing well after being released in the Klamath National Forest.

State Department of Fish and Game officials said they picked up a signal from an electronic transmitter that was attached to one of the animal's ears. It showed the bear, named Li'l Smokey by his rescuers, had awakened from hibernation and traveled about 4 1/2 miles from his den.

Tom Millham of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, a nonprofit that helped treat the bear, says the development is a "great indicator" of Li'l Smokey's health.

A state forester rescued the burned and badly dehydrated bear cub after spotting him last July on the edge of the Moon Fire near the boundaries of Trinity and Shasta counties. He was placed in a hibernation den in February.
