"Li'l Smokey," a black bear cub rescued by a firefighter while fleeing a Northern California wildfire, is getting more active, even checking out other bears.
Center officials say that Li'l Smokey weights 12 pounds and 4 ounces as of today. But they do say he's getting a little pickier when it comes to food. They're plan is to keep trying different things until they can find something the little cub really likes to eat.
They say Li'l Smokey's paws still have good circulation. He's even standing on them. His caretakers snapped a picture of him statnding on his hind legs sneaking a peek out the window in his crate. They believe he was watching a two cubs in the bear rehab cage, who he could see on the BEAR TV (the closed-circuit television that enables caregivers to watch the cubs as they rehab in the outside cage).
The cub, rescued by firefighter Adam Deem from a the "Moon Fire" near Redding on Thursday, July 17, likely stepped on scorching ground, and may have been burned by the flames.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
