A Great Dane was just days away from being euthanized when he ran away from a foster home, running directly into the hands of his new owner, a war veteran who didn't particularly like pets but found unexpected comfort in the big dog.
Henry, a two-year-old Great Dane mottled with black on his white coat, was too big to be kept by the Stanislaus County animal shelter, and was placed in a temporary home by Kindred Canines Rescue when he was only days away from being put down.
A few days later, Henry scaled the fence at his foster home and escaped into Modesto.
At approximately the same time, Ron Dorville stepped out of his home to go on his daily walk and found him.
"He just followed me all the way home, and that was it. I was in love before we got home," Ron said. "I didn't get him, he got me."
The chance encounter proved to have unexpected benefits for Ron, a retired Army colonel who served in Vietnam and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
"It's very hard to relax and shut everything out, but the dog has given me an inner peace that's just unbelievable," Ron said.
The dog now roams the Dorville household as a permanent member of the family.
