Dog Saves Owner From Bear Attack In Calaveras Co.
CALAVERAS COUNTY (CBS13) ―
A brave dog is being credited with saving her owner from a bear attack in Calaveras County.
Mike Stricklin was hiking with his dog Dakota when a 300 pound female bear attacked him.
Stricklin says he spotted the bear and cubs growling in the bushes and tried to run.
"I got to where I couldn't run anymore so I decide to play dead on the ground, I fell and ended up with this," said Stricklin pointing to some deep scratches on his back and side. "I covered my head and closed my eyes and held my breath I could hear her breathing over the top of me. I took a quick breath and boom I got hit and it felt like somebody kicked me extremely hard."
Faced with death, Mike's dog Dakota somehow managed to scare away the bear.
Mike's wounds are healing. He says he plans to return to the trail sometime soon, but won't venture out into the deep wilderness.
Rangers say don't travel alone and bring a walking stick or something loud to ward of bears.
