Mountain Lion Spotted In Grass Valley Community
GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (CBS13) ―
Witnesses say it's the size of a German Shepard. Residents say they spotted a cougar this morning near Memorial Park in Grass Valley.
"I take her out to go to the bathroom," Bill Reid explains about taking out his small dog.
That's when Bill Reid says he saw something Friday morning that stopped him in his tracks.
"It was a cougar," said Reid.
A mountain lion Reid says was standing less than 20 feet away from him and his small dog.
"It turned around and hissed and it had some teeth on him," says Reid.
Luckily, the cat ran off, leaping over two fences and into a canal. But this isn't the first time a cougar the size of a German Shepard has been seen in the area.
"We had another female in the community, see when the large cat carried off a cat," says Reid.
A mountain lion has been sighted at least three times in the last month.
What makes these sightings even more unusual is that they're happening right in the middle of town and right next to a playground.
"It's frequented this area, a lot of families of kids (come here). The only reason a cat would be here cause its hungry," say police.
Police believe the cat travels through the canal that runs through the park and along some homes, like Rose Philips home. She's worried the big cat will get into her yard when her grandchildren are there.
"They play out in the backyard all the time, back there where the opening is and I don't want something to happen to them," says Rose.
